National Personal Safety Day is an annual event aimed at raising awareness of the simple, practical solutions that everyone can use to help avoid violence and aggression in today’s society. It’s about helping people live safer, more confident lives.
READY STEADY SAFE
Compared to many countries, public transport in the UK is remarkably safe. Some 6 billion journeys are made by bus, coach, cab, tram or rail each year and incidents of crime against passengers are very rare. However incidents do happen so it makes sense to take care whether travelling by bus, tram, train or cab.

The theme of National Personal Safety Day 2009, therefore, is safety on journeys involving public transport.
The Trust points out that although the risk of crime happening is low, the perception of crime on public transport is much higher and this can act as a deterrent to many people. Often the journey is considered relatively safe but the journey to and from the bus stop and the environment surrounding the platform/bus stop is not.
Therefore the aim of the READY STEADY SAFE campaign is not only to give the public the knowledge to be able to reduce the risks even further but also the confidence to use public transport without fear of becoming a victim of crime.
