Guest blog by Ian Johannessen - Managing Director of Peoplesafe Peoplesafe, suppliers of lone worker personal safety devices will once again be sponsoring the upcoming National Personal Safety Awards. Managing Director Ian Johannessen tells us why celebrating achievements in safety is so important… We are delighted to be involved with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust and the National Personal Safety Awards once again. Like the Trust, the safety of individuals lies at the heart of everything we do, so the opportunity to sponsor these awards is warmly welcomed. The awards are a great initiative as they recognise the dedicated activities of many who do not put themselves forward for accolades or see themselves as heroes. All too often, the subject of personal safety is only brought up in a negative context – after an incident or as a warning. To celebrate individual and group safety success feels like swimming upstream but we must strive to bring personal safety to the forefront of people’s minds, it is a great practice to recognise enthusiasm and personal, team and organisational commitment. As a company that provides lone worker personal safety devices, we have a clear interest in safety within the workplace. For our own award category, we have created the ‘Personal Safety Champion Award’. This will be awarded to an individual who has facilitated the improvement of safety for employees in their workplace. This award gives important recognition to people who champion the issue of personal safety in the workplace. Lone worker safety is not just about ticking boxes and giving staff equipment; it’s about the culture of the organisation. And it always needs someone to champion lone worker safety; someone who takes it upon themselves to keep staff safe. This is not an easy role, so winning an award for what can sometimes feel like a thankless task is a great way to recognise hard work.
